Introduction to Machine Design
In Mechanical Engineering, Machine Design is subjected to creating new or Advanced machines. This involves improving the existing machines to better machines.
The design process is a time-consuming process which includes implementing an Idea and considering the commercial and economic aspects, Making the idea into a shape in the form of drawings by keeping the available resources in mind to make the actual Idea into a life.
This is the art of Mechanical engineering.
The Idea Thake shape and eventually come to life
Machine Design Classification
Designing of a machine can be done by these three processes
- Adapting the existing design
- Developing the existing design
- Developing new Design
These are the three classifications of a Machine design. These are the approaches which involve in machine designing processes. Let’s discuss them in depth.
Adaptive Design
Design of a machine can be accomplished by Adopting the design of existing machines and a very small alteration is needed in the design of the old or existing machines to run. In this case no need for the highly/special skilled designers to design the machine or alter the changes in the machine.
Development Design
Taking the design of the existing machine and developing the design to make it more economical in production cost, superior in the operation, sustain in the marketing. this type of machine design requires considerable specific skills to the designers.
New Design
An entirely new product takes a birth with a lot of research on new ideas, prototypes. a confident and successful outcome will become the new product. The designer should have a lot of technical skills, creative thinking and moreover Experience.
The Machine Design Subject in the Mechanical Engineering Includes the following topics
- Introduction to Machine Design
- Engineering Materials and their Properties
- Manufacturing considerations in designing of a machine
- Simple Stresses in Machine Parts
- Torsional and Bending Stresses in Machine Parts
- Variable Stresses in Machine Parts
- Pipes and Pipe Joints
- Riveted Joints
- Welded Joints
- Screwed Joints
- Cotter and Knuckle Joints
- Keys and Coupling
- Shafts
- Levers
- Power Screws
- Flat Belt Drives, Flat Belt Pulleys, V-Belt and Rope Drives, Chain Drives
- Flywheel/ Inertia Rings
- Springs
- Clutches, Brakes
- Bearings (Sliding Contact Bearings, Rolling Contact Bearings)
- Gears (Spur Gears, Helical Gears, Bevel Gears, Worm Gears
- I.C Engines (Internal Combustion engines)
These are all topics which we should cover thru the mechanical engineering career.

Is CAD useful in this field? I have recently substitute taught a CAD class. Some students are interested in engineering although not as many as there were many years ago.
