As we have discussed the vibratory motion in the Previous article, The three different types of vibrations are the free vibrations, forced Vibrations, Damped Vibrations. In this article, we are going to discuss what are the different types of Free Vibrations.
Types of Free Vibrations
When an initial displacement is given to a body, and further no external force acts on the body then the body starts vibrating. These vibrations are called free or natural vibrations. The frequency of these vibrations is called the Natural frequency.
There are mainly 3 different types of free vibrations may be experienced by any object. Those are
- Longitudinal vibrations
- Transverse vibrations
- Torsional vibrations
Let us consider a shaft whose one end is fixed and the other end is carrying a heavy disc, as shown in below figure. In the following, we are going to discuss how this as a system, experience each one of the above-mentioned vibrations one by one.
Longitudinal vibrations
When the particles of the disc or the shaft move parallel to the axis of the shaft as shown in the below gif image, then the vibrations are known as the Longitudinal vibrations.
In this case of Longitudinal Vibrations, The tensile and compressive stresses are induced alternatively due to the shaft is elongated and shortened alternatively as we can see it from the above gif image.
Transverse vibrations
When the particles of the disc or the shaft move approximately perpendicular to the axis of the shaft as shown in the below gif image, then the vibrations are known as the Transverse vibrations.
In this case of Transverse Vibrations, The bending stresses are induced alternatively due to the shaft is bends and straight alternatively as we can see it from the above gif image.
Torsional vibrations
When the particles of the disc or the shaft move circle about the axis of the shaft as shown in the below gif image, then the vibrations are known as the Torsional vibrations.
In this case of Torsional Vibrations, The torsional shear stresses are induced alternatively due to the shaft is twist and untwist alternatively, as we can see it from the above gif image.
These are the three different types of free vibrations.
Conclusion
